FLUX | meaning, definition
What is the meaning of Flux Surface?
I chose the name Flux Surface because of of a technical ceramic reference (explained below) and also because of the meaning of the word Flux is Flow and I like how this relates the fluidity and changing effects of porcelain in lighting and also the different ways I choose to apply the material.
There are actually several applications of the word Flux, across different areas, all of them appropriate for my work with porcelain and light.
1. The dictionary definition of flux:
A flowing or flow, the flowing in of the tide. Continuous movement and change
2. In ceramics:
In a high firing when the glaze melts the top layer of the ceramic surface also ‘fluxes’ so the glaze fuses to the clay body. Unlike in lower temperature firings like earthenware where the glaze sits separately on the clay surface.
3) In physics:
Flux describes any effect that appears to pass or travel through a surface or substance.
4) Old English
Derived from Latin fluxus "flowing" past participle of fluere "to flow"
