Promise lamp
A jet black porcelain lamp carved with line drawn seaweed designs that shine in the dark.
This is a special and different sort of lamp. I have made it in protest of the actions and pollution of our seas and rivers by the water companies and lack of culpability from the Environment Agency and the government.
Despite sewage being regularly pumped into our oceans and rivers in the UK, there are positive stories of change. The re-wilding of Sussex coastal waters and the return of kelp means the oxygenation of the water and the establishment of nursery grounds for sea creatures. Kelp not only grows faster but also produces 70% more oxygen than land plants. Around 70% of the total oxygen on Earth is produced by seaweed.
It’s wonderful stuff. So ‘Promise’ lamp is made to represent the potential for change, for our oceans and for our environment and is full of positivity and hope.

Surfers Against Sewage is a grassroots environmental charity that campaigns to protect the ocean and all it makes possible. It was created in 1990 by a group of Cornish surfers, fighting to clean up the sea that was making them sick. Now, Surfers Against Sewage campaigns on all that threatens the ocean - plastic pollution, the climate emergency, industrial exploitation and water quality – by taking action on the ground that triggers change from the top.
